6 State Champions at Wisconsin Boxing Tournament

May 16, 2011

Watertown has a lot to be proud of. This past weekend, the Watertown Boxing Club hosted the Wisconsin Boxing Championships and walked away with six State Titles. Arturo Villarreal 106 pound class, Noah Kislia 128 pound class, Delisio Jose Heavy Weight, Ryan Jones, Super Heavyweight and Watertown's First Ladies Of Boxing, Tracey Degner and Dulce Martinez all won the State Championship Trophy. Arturo Villarreal and Ryan Jones will compete in the Regional Championships in Minnesota on June 3rd. The winners from this tournament will proceed to the National Championships in Mobile Alabama in August. If they win there, they have a chance to compete in the Olympics. "Competition is tough but Art and Ryan are ready" said Coach Mario Nevarez. "Augie and I are working hard to get them in shape. They are putting everything they have into their work outs. I think we have a good chance at both the regional and national level". In other matches, Desmond Holleman, 125 pound class from Watertown also defeated Mario Rocha of Kenosha to proceed to the State Finals. Jerry Mares of Watertown Boxing Club, 123 pound class, lost a controversial match against Andrew Beltron of Kenosha. Koltin Kislia, heavy weight from Watertown lost a very close match to Milli Ismaili of Neillsville and Local Master's Boxer and Coach, Augie Magestro, fought to a draw with Brian Andrews of Milwaukee. "The team did great" said Nevarez. "We couldn't be more proud of our performance. We had 9 boxers compete and 6 won State Titles. That's great!" Local favorite, Augie Magestro made his comeback match most interesting with a draw. "It was great getting back in the ring after almost 35 years." said Magestro. I can't wait until May 21st. Another big match. After that, the World Championships in Kansas City". Magestro is scheduled to box another match in Turtle Lake on Saturday, May 21st. He will then be fighting in the Ringside World Championships in Kansas CityAugust 1-5. "We will have nine or ten boxers representing Watertown at The World Championships" said Nevarez. We also have the Regional Championships going at the same time in Alabama. That will be a big week for Watertown. I think Augie may just win the World Title. He is training very hard as well as all the rest of the boxers. They are very dedicated and they all want towin." "I love working with the team" said Magestro. They are all grea tkids and they really work hard. They don't cut me any slack in the ringeither! It's all business. Tracey and Dulce are two of the strongest youngladies I have ever met. They are both very pretty and lady like but in the ring, they are just as tough as anyone else. In my opinion, they are all champs, every one of them. I hope to be training them for a long time." What's next for The Watertown Boxing Club? "We have a few matches set up in the near future" said Nevarez. Right now, we have the Cinco de Mayo Festival on May 21st here in Watertown where we will have a few bouts in Riverside Park. After that, Augie, Otilia and I will sit down and map out our next matches. Probably one in June, July and then the World Championships in August. We'll see what's on the horizon." "Whatever it will be, you can bet it will be exciting". Said Magestro. "Watch out for this team. They are the best!"
